How download versions work

Buyers keep the version they bought, and get every one you publish after it.

Before anyone buys it

The files you add to a download are its version 1. Until someone buys it, you change them right on the product page: add, rename, remove and reorder them. Nobody has them yet, so there’s nothing to publish. The first buyer gets them as they are when they pay.

After the first sale

Once someone has bought it, its files don’t change in place. You make an update: a draft of the next version that starts with the current files. Only you can see it until you publish it, and buyers keep what they have.

A published version never changes after that. To fix a mistake, make another update. An update whose files are the same as the version buyers have can’t be published.

Who gets which version

Each buyer gets the version they bought and every version you publish after it. Say you publish version 1 with two files, someone buys it, and then you publish version 2 without one of them:

  • The buyer from version 1 gets version 2, and still has version 1 with both files.
  • Someone who buys after that gets version 2. Version 1, and the file you took out, aren’t theirs.

So removing a file never takes it from anyone who already had it, and a file you take out isn’t handed to new buyers.

What buyers see

On their downloads page, the newest version comes first. When it’s newer than the one they bought, it’s marked Updated with the date, and shows what you wrote under What’s new. Earlier versions are folded under Earlier versions, with the one they bought marked.

When you publish an update, you can email them about it too. The email says what’s new and links to their downloads. They can stop your shop’s emails from it, but they keep their downloads.
